I’ve always been curious about how people think, and through doing a lot of playing music and singing have also been pretty keen on sounds. When I was at Unversity I was delighted to find out there was a whole field of scientific research that involved brains and speech/language/hearing. I found myself genuinely inspired and full of ideas, and I decided I wanted to spend much more time doing that kind of research. Before that time, I honestly thought I was pretty good at learning a lot of things and doing chemistry problems but that I didn’t have a scientist’s innovation or creativity – it was actually that I just hadn’t found my niche yet.
