After I finished at university I applied for a PhDs (a sort of science apprenticeship) with lots of different people. One professor seemed to be doing very intersting work in schizophrenia, so when I was offered that position I took it. He seemed very enthusiastic about it and it sort of rubbed off.

Beyond that, several members of my wifes family suffer from some form of mental illness (depression in several cases and one person with autism), which really encouraged me to keep going and to try and understand what causes conditons like these.

I have wanted for a long time to do something which would help others, and this seemed like the ideal way to go to me.
