I love to cook — particularly BBQs, so I part of my non-work time each day normally involves making and eating food. I also have a young daughter at home so we do things together. At the moment, she is really into Mario Bros on her DS so we play that together and we’re reading the Harry Potter books (she loves those!) We also do the boring things like practicing piano, homework, etc.

I enjoying reading, so I normally have at least one book going (in addition to HP). And when we have time, we love to travel. After IAS, we’re off to Australia for a few weeks which should be great!

There are a few things that I enjoy in my free time. One is food. I absolutely love eating out and living in London is brilliant for this. I live in a part of town where there’s lots of amazing Turkish restaurants, but I also love Indian, Korean, Japanese, Vietnamese and proper Italian. I’m going out for dinner this Friday and I can’t wait! I also really like going for cocktails… yum yum.

Another big thing for me is the Eurovision Song Contest. I’m not kidding – I absolutely love it and have followed it closely with two of my best friends since we were at school. Some people think it’s tragic to follow the Eurovision but I am a proper devotee – I’ve even travelled to Sweden to be in the audience for their song selection! It’s just so much fun. I try to ignore the haters ; ) I’m currently planning a party for me and all my mates to watch the show in May.

On the music theme, I love doing karaoke with my friends. We sometimes have lab karaoke outings too! My party piece song is ‘Biology’ by Girls Aloud : ) I also play violin in an amateur orchestra in London. I think my love of music and sound had a big part to play in what I’ve ended up researching.

I also love watching films, at the big cinemas and arthouse theatres too. I saw The Hurt Locker recently and I’m hoping to go and see Alice in Wonderland soon but have been crazy busy – maybe I’ll find time after ‘I’m a Scientist…’ is finished! And I like exercising – I cycle to and from work (about 6 miles each way) and have recently had a go at running.

As much as I can spending time with my wife and 1-year old daughter. There is a park and a zoo near my house, so I like taking the wee lass there when I can. I also enjoy acting and am currently rehersing for a play off the Easter story. When I have time to myself (not as often as I used to) I also like watching films and playing on the Xbox360.
