      It looks like your genes play a large part in it, although various environmental factors (such as difficulties when your mother was pregnant or you smoking canabis) also have an effect.

      It is possible that your genes determine how “at risk” you are of getting schizophrenia, and then other factors in the environment can “trigger it”.

      Regardless, most people with schizophrenia do not show symptoms until their early twenties.
